for what purpose herkimer diamonds are used?
for what reason herkimer diamonds(quartz) are used in electronics and are they expensive?
quartz crystals are used as radio frequency receivers (at least they used to be)
Don't know about price but couldn't be that expensive: try Ebay or rock shop website as they are collectibles.

Herkimer Diamond Question?
Ok, so my boyfriend and I are going diamond mining in NY and were planning to find my diamond for my engagement ring. Now, I realize that a herkimer diamond is not a true diamond but rather a quartz. I personally don't care whether it is truly real or not. I have read that herkimer diamonds make great jewelry but I'm concerned because after searching for hours I haven't seen an engagement ring made out of herkimer diamonds.
I think it would be great finding a diamond alongside my boyfriend soon-to-be fiance that we choose to have cut...but can it be? We are both really excited about this possibility because we believe it would have much more meaning, and, is so much cheaper.
My questions:
Can a herkimer diamond be cut to an engagement ring?
If so, will it even look real?

it won't look like a real diamond if that's what you mean, more like a clear crystal, and they cant cut them into alot of the special cuts they do for diamonds, because they shatter, as they're quartz.
it will look really unique and i'm sure that a jeweller can make it look very beautiful, and i think it's an awesome idea to go with your bf to get a stone together- really sweet.
